Voice chat with strangers: just a voice, no camera
Sometimes you do not feel like showing your face, but you very much feel like talking. Voice chat on Veilr is a conversation with a real person and no video: no hair, no background, no "hold on, I am not dressed". Press Start and you are already hearing someone.
Your microphone comes up the moment you enter the room; your own mic and the other person’s sound switch off with one tap. If the conversation is not going anywhere, press Next and a second later you are talking to somebody else.
It is also the easiest way to make a foreign language move from your head to your mouth. Turn subtitles on and their speech arrives as text in your language while you try to answer in theirs — and if you mark the language you are practising, native speakers come up more often.
What makes Veilr different
Voice and nothing else
The camera is never switched on in this format: the format is chosen before the conversation and does not change mid-way. Want video? That is the neighbouring address and a separate conversation.
Subtitles instead of a dictionary
While the other person speaks you read the translation in your own language. It is the CC button inside the call, and it works in voice and video alike.
Language practice
Mark the language you are learning and its native speakers come up more often. It is a soft priority, so you never end up waiting in an empty queue for one.
You decide who you are looking for
Gender is a preference: ask for women and we try that first whenever a woman is online in this mode; if nobody is, you are connected to someone else rather than left waiting. The other person’s choice is always respected, people who picked non-binary are matched by those who chose ‘Any’, and with Boost your choice is a hard filter. Age and country are a soft priority: an exact match first, then a wider search so you are not left waiting.
What is left after the chat
A random chat’s text is not written to our permanent database, and the audio is not recorded. A short buffer of the session’s last 50 messages expires by itself within 15 minutes of the chat ending, and the conversation moves into your private chat history only on a mutual Connect. Subtitles, though, are switched on by either side, and what gets recognised is the speech of the person being read: if the other one turns them on, it is your speech that goes to the recognition provider. The resulting text reaches the reader only and is not kept on our side.
Reporting takes one tap
Every conversation has a report button with a reason to pick. Violations cost the account restrictions, up to a ban.

Finding people and talking to them costs nothing in any format. The only paid thing is Boost: unlimited translation, priority in the queue and strict filters.
Common questions
Do I need an account?
Yes — the search will not start without one. You sign in with an account you already have; we never create a password and never show an email form. Those two seconds keep bots out: the person on the other side signed in too.
Is the camera really staying off?
Really. The format is fixed before the conversation and cannot change on the fly — a voice chat never requests video at all. If you want video, that is a separate address and a separate conversation.
What if we speak different languages?
Turn subtitles on: their speech shows up as text in your language. A few minutes of translation are free, after that it is Boost or a minutes top-up.
