Chatiw alternative: text chat with strangers, and a call if you want one

Chatiw asks four things — a nickname, an age between 18 and 90, a gender and a country — then shows you who is online, those details beside each name, to message whoever you like. No email, no confirmations, in its own words. Veilr takes the opposite route: you set your conditions once, the matching does the choosing, and the text chat above is where it starts.

Why Chatiw still works

The way in is about as short as it gets: no photo, no camera, nothing to confirm in an inbox. Four fields were the whole procedure on its last archived front page, September 2025, and it has worked for over a decade — the footer says 2010, the domain record February 2013 — with the name still drawing six-figure monthly searches.

The list is the better idea, though. Rather than take whoever a queue produces, you read who is there — gender, age, country — and pick who is worth a first message. That is a different product from a random pairing, and for many the right one.

It is also text and only text — what somebody on a slow connection or unwilling to be on camera came for. Its FAQ is unusually straight, too: the 48-hour ban, the country lock and the ban on links sit there in its own words, not left for you to find by breaking them.

What VIP removes, and what that tells you

A free Chatiw account is best described by the list of what VIP takes away. According to its own sales page, archived in June 2019, paying removes advertising and a bot captcha, reserves your nickname, marks it in the online list, grants something called "ban priority", and allows links, phone numbers and unlimited images. Read that backwards and you have the free account.

The prices there — $4.95 a month, up to $99.95 for life — are history, not a quote. More useful: you probably cannot pay them. Snapshots from August 2021, October 2022, April 2024 and September 2025 answer identically — no membership is left, come back tomorrow.

One more rule before you type a nickname: ask the FAQ how to get unbanned, and the answer is 48 hours away from the site, appealable by email only, with no reason owed you meanwhile.

The comparison, row by row

Chatiw owns the top of that table, fairly: one row is arithmetic, the other a design choice. Reading a list and picking a name is a different pleasure from being handed one stranger.

What a Veilr sign-in buys

The choosing happens before the chat, and the gender filter costs nothing. Set your gender in your profile and you can choose who to talk to: free, tried first whenever someone you asked for is online, and if nobody is, you are connected to someone else rather than left waiting. The other person’s choice is always respected. With Boost your choice is a hard filter and you go first in line; people who registered as non-binary are matched by those who chose ‘Any’. Age and country stay preferences on a free account, so a search that finds nobody widens instead of stalling, and on Veilr nobody picks you off a list.

Signing in comes first, and the server is what enforces it. You arrive with a social account you already have — the sign-in screen shows which ones are open to you — and there is no guest mode, no search without one. Veilr is adults only, 18+: people state their date of birth when they sign up, and our servers refuse a match to an account whose recorded age is under 18.

Two languages in one conversation, and text is not where it ends. Type in yours and your message can reach your partner in theirs, the original one tap away; every free account starts with a run of translations, earns more, and Boost lifts the ceiling. On a call between two different declared languages, live captions can start on their own — five free minutes with a new account, then Boost, a top-up or a reward.

A penalty that explains itself. No automated decision bans anybody for good: automatic penalties are capped at 30 days, a permanent block takes a person, and the notice says which of the two it was. Report somebody mid-chat and Veilr moves you on, keeping you two out of each other's matches for a day.

And the person afterwards, if it was worth it. ‘Add to contacts’ is the only way accounts are ever exchanged on Veilr, and it takes both of you: agree, and you swap the name and email on your accounts, and the talk moves into a private chat. Until then your partner sees your gender, your age band and, when it is known, a country flag; in text and voice also a blurred version of your photo, any Verified or Boost badge, and your native language once you set it — that one you can switch off. A partner with Boost switched on can see the photo clearly for that chat without you being told. Only someone searching with an age filter sees your exact age. A stranger you are matched with is never shown your real name, email address or city.

Which of the two is yours

Want a wall of names to read, with nothing between you and the first message? Chatiw has had that working for over a decade, free. Want one conversation on agreed terms, in your own language, with the person still there tomorrow? That is the trade signing in makes.

From landing here to talking on Veilr

  1. 1. Sign in with a social account you already have.
  2. 2. Pick Text, set the gender filter and press start; when the conversation is worth keeping, press ‘Add to contacts’.

Chatiw, four questions

Is Chatiw free?

The chat is; VIP is the paid tier, and its purchase page has answered "no longer any membership left … Please comeback tomorrow" since 2021. On Veilr the matching, all three modes, the gender filter and a first run of translations cost nothing; only Boost and extra caption minutes are sold.

Why can't I change my country on Chatiw?

It is read from your IP address on purpose: the FAQ says that stops people pretending to live elsewhere, and suggests putting the country into your nickname instead. Veilr sorts nobody into country rooms — one queue per mode, and country is a preference that loosens when nobody fits, unless Boost is on. Some countries are not served — the United Kingdom is currently unavailable.

Is there a Chatiw app on Google Play?

Chatiw links to an Android app from its own sidebar, but the Google Play listing for com.chatiw.me answered with a 404 on 27 August 2026. Veilr runs in a browser with nothing to install, and its Android app asks for camera, microphone and notifications — no location, no contacts, no files.

Can a Veilr text chat become a call?

Not the same one: the mode is chosen before the search and never changes under you, which is what stops a typed conversation turning into a video call. Start a voice or video search instead, or press ‘Add to contacts’ — between saved contacts, calls are part of the private chat.
