Chatib alternative: one-on-one text chat, not a room of nicknames

Chatib puts you in a room called Dating, Music, Politics or Philosophy the moment you type a nickname, gender, age and country. Veilr answers the same wish from the other end: one stranger, on conditions you set first, writing in their own language while you read yours — and, if you both press ‘Add to contacts’, a contact that keeps it. The chat at the top of this page is Veilr's text chat: pick text, press start, no camera.

What Chatib gets right

Four fields and you are talking — no email, nothing to install, no camera. Registering later is free too, and buys a reserved nickname, animated GIFs, coloured fonts and a friends list; the only hint of a price is a FAQ line about a VIP member, whose link opens that same free form.

The rooms are the better half. Chatib sorts them by subject — Dating, Music, Politics, Religion, Sports — and by country, from the US to India, so several conversations run at once and you pick a name off the list. Both chatib.us and chatib.com open today, under a 2026 copyright.

Where a nickname stops being enough

All anyone knows about you there is the four things you typed — and the reverse is just as true. Chatib does not dispute where that leads: its safety page says the site's anonymous nature makes verifying a user's age impossible, and its terms take on no obligation to monitor user content. Nobody is behind the name, and nobody promised to watch.

On Trustpilot, on a company-verified profile, Chatib sits at 1.8 out of 5 across 40 reviews to April 2026: bots, fake profiles, extortion attempts, an ad-crowded interface. Opinions on a small sample, not measurements.

Two of those rows are Chatib's, and the first is not close: four fields will always be quicker than a sign-in — the rest of this page is what that sign-in buys.

What Veilr gives you instead of a room

One stranger, on conditions you set first. Set your gender in your profile and you can choose who to talk to: free, tried first whenever someone you asked for is online, and if nobody is, you are connected to someone else rather than left waiting. The other person’s choice is always respected. With Boost your choice is a hard filter and you go first in line; people who registered as non-binary are matched by those who chose ‘Any’. Without Boost, age and country stay soft, so a search that finds nobody widens instead of stalling. The format is chosen before the search and holds to the end, so a chat you began by typing cannot become a camera pointed at you.

To search, you sign in first. You arrive with a social account you already have — the sign-in screen shows which ones are open — and there is no guest mode. Your partner sees your gender, age bracket and, when it is known, a country flag; in text and voice your photo reaches them blurred, clear only to a partner with an active Boost, for that one chat. A stranger you are matched with never sees your name, email or city. Veilr is adults only, 18+; younger accounts are refused a match. No automatic decision bans anybody for good: 30 days is the ceiling.

You each write in your own language. Type in yours and your message can reach your partner in theirs, the original one tap away; every free account starts with a run of translations, earns more, and Boost lifts the ceiling. On a call between two declared languages, live captions start on their own: five free minutes with a new account, then Boost, a top-up or a reward. Veilr's interface is available in 16 languages.

‘Add to contacts’ turns a stranger into a contact, and it takes both of you. A one-sided press creates no contact and saves no conversation — it only asks — and a refusal is silent, so nobody is turned down out loud; until you both agree, neither sees a name, a photo or an email. The conversation comes with the person: open the contact a week later and what you wrote as strangers is still there — with replies, reactions, edits, read receipts, photos stripped of metadata and geotag, calls, and a timer that clears the lot after a day, a week or a month.

Free, quiet on your phone, and plain about penalties. Veilr runs in a browser with nothing to install, and its Android app never asks for your location, contacts or files. A random chat's text does not go into a permanent database: a short buffer of the session's last 50 messages expires by itself within 15 minutes of the chat ending, and it becomes history you can come back to only if you both press ‘Add to contacts’. Calls are never saved as recordings, and analytics start only if you agree. Reporting somebody during a chat moves you on to the next partner and keeps you two out of each other's matches for a day; blocking is a separate choice of your own, and it works both ways.

Who this leaves where

If you want the room — several voices at once, a list to scan, nothing to sign — Chatib has that, free. If you want one conversation nobody else is reading, a free say in who you meet and the person still there tomorrow, that is Veilr, and a sign-in is the whole price.

Starting a chat on Veilr

  1. 1. Sign in to Veilr with a social account you already have — the sign-in screen shows which ones are open to you.
  2. 2. Choose text; Veilr fixes the format before the search begins.
  3. 3. Set the gender filter if you like, then press start. When the conversation is worth keeping, press ‘Add to contacts’.

Questions people ask about Chatib

Is Chatib free?

Yes — advertising pays for it. But that is not the difference. Veilr's core is free too: matching, all three formats, the gender filter, a run of message translations and five free minutes of live captions. Only two things are sold: Boost, which puts you first in the queue, and extra caption minutes.

Does Veilr have chat rooms?

No — every Veilr conversation is one-on-one, which is what makes the gender filter, translation and adding a contact work. For group text rooms, Emerald Chat has them.

Can a stranger find me or add me on Veilr?

No. Veilr has no people search, by name or by link, and no request you can send a stranger; a contact exists only when both of you press ‘Add to contacts’ in a chat you were in.

Do I need a camera for text?

No. Text on Veilr is a format of its own, not a panel beside a video window; the camera is never requested.
