Random video chat: one button and someone is looking back at you
Some evenings there is nobody to talk to and the feed has nothing left in it. Here you do not add anyone, wait for approval, or write an opening line into the void: press Start video chat, and once the search finds someone, there is a person on your screen who came here for exactly the same reason. Not clicking? Press Next and the search starts over.
Your camera comes up before the search does, so while we look for a match you only see yourself — enough time to fix the light, the framing and your mood. Your microphone and the other person’s sound switch off with one tap in the middle of a call, and an unpleasant stranger is gone with a single Next.
Language is not a wall here. Turn subtitles on and what the other person says appears along the bottom of the screen in your language. And if the conversation went well, both of you press Add to contacts — they stay in your contacts, and you can message or call them later instead of hoping to run into them again.
If you came looking for an Omegle alternative
Omegle closed in November 2023, and the habit it left behind has been looking for a home ever since: one button, a random stranger opposite you, Next when it is not working. That part works the same way here — no photos to show off, no friend list to build first. If you arrived from Chatroulette or Ome.tv, the mechanics will feel familiar from the first press.
What is different is worth saying plainly. The search will not start until you sign in with an account you already have: not data collection, a filter against bots and throwaway visits. Speech is turned into subtitles in your language inside the conversation, and chat messages arrive translated. And if you liked someone, pressing Add to contacts on both sides keeps them in your contacts — the conversation does not have to end for good.
What makes Veilr different
Three formats, one Next button
Video, voice and text are three neighbouring addresses of the same service. Tired of being on camera? Move to voice or to typing without setting anything up again.
Translation inside the conversation
The other person’s speech turns into subtitles in your language — in video and in voice alike. Chat messages arrive already translated, and the original is one tap away.
You decide who you are looking for
Gender is a preference: ask for women and we try that first whenever a woman is online in this mode; if nobody is, you are connected to someone else rather than left waiting. The other person’s choice is always respected, people who picked non-binary are matched by those who chose ‘Any’, and with Boost your choice is a hard filter. Age and country are a soft priority: we look for an exact match first, then widen the search so you are not left waiting in an empty queue.
Matching on shared interests
Tick a couple of interests and we try to find someone who cares about the same things. Tick none and we simply find the next available person.
What is left after the chat
A random chat’s text is not written to our permanent database, and the video is not recorded. A short buffer of the session’s last 50 messages expires by itself within 15 minutes of the chat ending, so a report about that chat is not empty. The one exception: if you both press Add to contacts, the conversation moves into your private chat history.
Reporting takes one tap
Every conversation has a report button with a reason to pick; one frame of the other person’s video is attached to it. Violations cost the account restrictions, up to a ban.
Matching is always free
Finding people and talking to them costs nothing in any format. Paid extras are optional — Boost, for example, gives unlimited translation, priority in the queue and strict filters.
Common questions
Do I need an account?
Yes — the search will not start without one. You sign in with an account you already have; we never create a password and never show an email form. Signing in keeps bots and throwaway visits out, so in a video chat the person opposite you has signed in too.
Can anyone else see me?
No. Your video goes only to the person you were matched with, and only while the conversation lasts: we do not record it and we do not broadcast it anywhere. Single frames do reach us, though, and in both directions: when you report the other person, a frame from their camera is attached to the report — and when they report you, a frame from yours is. Such a frame goes to moderation and is not stored.
How can this be free?
Matching, video, voice and text cost nothing. You pay only for optional extras, such as Boost — unlimited translation, priority in the queue and strict filters. It is a one-off payment, with no subscription and no auto-renewal.
Is this an Omegle replacement?
In spirit, yes: the search still hands you a stranger at random. Three things differ — you sign in instead of joining an anonymous crowd, speech is translated into subtitles, and someone you liked can stay in your contacts.
Who is on the other side?
Adults from all over the world: Veilr is an adults-only service. The interface is translated into sixteen languages, so your match can come from almost anywhere.
