Emerald Chat alternative: the filter that picks your partner is free

Emerald Chat puts a price on the thing that decides who appears in front of you. The gender filter comes with Emerald Gold at $5.89; country and language live one floor up, in Platinum at $12.89 — and Platinum is not a tier you buy instead, it works only while a Gold subscription runs underneath it. Karma, the score Emerald uses to steer matches, is topped up with money as well. Veilr is built from the other end: deciding who you meet is free. The video chat above is ours — press start.

What the subscriptions actually cover

Gold is a bundle: the gender filter, priority in the queue, images in private chats, a badge, and a switch to keep anonymous accounts out of your matches. Platinum adds country and language above it. A premium badge costs another $35.67 for three months, and extra karma is its own line item — reputation, by the unit.

What you pay depends on where: the archived App Store listing from December 2025 put Gold at $9.99 and Platinum at $19.99 against $5.89 and $12.89 on the website, and a Google Play review from October 2025 names $15.99 a month in the app. The two sides do not always recognise each other: Play reviews through 2025 describe a paid Gold working on one surface, not the other. Emerald's terms leave little room afterwards: subscriptions renew themselves, and all sales are final — no refunds. The filter is also a standing complaint about Gold, and Similarweb puts roughly 79% of Emerald's visitors as men — the problem people bought it to fix.

What Veilr hands over without a tier

Choosing your partner. Set your gender in your Veilr profile and you can choose who to talk to: free, tried first whenever someone you asked for is online, and if nobody is, you are connected to someone else rather than left waiting. The other person’s choice is always respected. With Boost your choice is a hard filter and you go first in line; people who registered as non-binary are matched by those who chose ‘Any’. Age and country are free preferences beside it, honoured first and widened if nobody answers, unless Boost holds them fixed.

No language filter, because there is nothing to filter. Emerald's answer to someone who doesn't speak your language is a subscription that hides them; Veilr's is translation: on a call between two declared languages, live captions start on their own — five free minutes with a new account, then Boost, a top-up or a reward. In text, Veilr can hand your message to your partner in their language, the original one tap away: free accounts start with a run of translations and earn more; Boost lifts the ceiling. You can switch the interface between 16 languages.

A reputation nobody can top up. Ratings after a Veilr chat are anonymous — never shown to anyone, including the person rated — and enough positive ones give a small, invisible lift in matching. No number on your profile to raise, and none to buy. Only two things are sold on Veilr: Boost, which puts you first in the queue, and extra caption minutes.

A video chat that stays a video chat. On Veilr you choose video before the search, and the mode is fixed the moment the match is made; nothing turns it into something else halfway through, and typing stays one tap away. Matching in video adds a small preference for symmetrical pairs — both showing a face, or both not. Report someone mid-chat and Veilr moves you to the next partner, then keeps you out of each other's matches for a day; blocking is a separate choice of your own, and holds both ways.

No search without signing in. You arrive with a social account you already have — the sign-in screen shows which ones are open — and there is no guest mode. Your partner sees your gender, your age band and, when it is known, a country flag; in text and voice also a blurred version of your photo, any verified or Boost badge, and your native language once you set it — that one you can switch off. The blur is not absolute: a partner with an active Boost can lift it for that chat, and Veilr does not tell you. Only someone searching with an age filter sees your exact age. A stranger you are matched with never sees your real name, email address or city. Veilr is adults only, 18+: our servers refuse a match to an account whose recorded age is under 18.

The two of them, honestly

Emerald never put a paywall across the conversation itself — random chats, interests, friends and karma matching all run unpaid — and its group text rooms are something Omegle never had. It is busy — Similarweb ranked it around 14,311 worldwide in July 2026 — and you are inside in one click: a captcha stands in for an account.

Two rows there are Emerald's, and the first is not arguable: a checkbox is faster than signing in. What signing in buys is the column beside it — a free choice of who you meet, a rating nobody can purchase, and a penalty recorded against the account and the device, not just a browser tab.

Starting on Veilr

  1. 1. Sign in with a social account you already have.
  2. 2. Stay on video, or switch to voice or text — the mode settles before the search.
  3. 3. Set the gender filter if you want it, then press start.

Questions people ask about Emerald Chat

Is Emerald Chat free?

The conversation is: random chats, interests, group rooms and karma matching cost nothing. The price is on the choosing — gender inside Gold, country and language inside Platinum. Veilr's free core is the opposite selection: matching, all three modes, the gender filter, a run of message translations and five minutes of live captions.

Is there still an Emerald Chat app for iPhone?

Not one you can install: the listing disappeared between December 2025 and March 2026, and Apple's lookup finds nothing in the nine storefronts we checked — though Emerald's home page still advertises an "IOS" download. Its Android app is alive and current. Veilr runs in a browser and has a native Android app.

Does Veilr have karma or group rooms?

Neither, for one reason: every Veilr conversation is one-on-one, which is what makes a two-way gender filter and live translation mean anything. If subject rooms are the draw, Chatib runs them.

Do I have to pay to filter by gender on Veilr?

No. Fill in your own gender in your Veilr profile and you can choose who to talk to: free, tried first whenever someone you asked for is online, and if nobody is, you are connected to someone else rather than left waiting. The other person’s choice is always respected. With Boost your choice is a hard filter and you go first in line; people who registered as non-binary are matched by those who chose ‘Any’. Boost changes where you stand in the queue, not whether the filter works.
