TalkWithStranger alternative: text one stranger, not a room
TalkWithStranger has been around since 2016, and it still works the way chat sites did back then. You pick a nickname, click once, and you're in a directory of more than 50 rooms sorted by country and topic, with a whole section for India. All of it is free, including the rooms split by gender. Veilr has no rooms at all. It finds you one partner, and the two of you type to each other. The text box at the top of this page is Veilr's.
A chat portal that grew up around India
The site says it was founded in 2016, and the domain was registered on 5 January that year. Its own About page names India as its second-largest audience. The Indian chat room has an address of its own, and India comes first in the "Popular Chatrooms" menu. Next to it are rooms for the USA, the UK, Canada and Australia, rooms for gaming and music, and one for depression support. There are mini-games as well: Bomberman, chess and Tetris.
That mix explains how it spread. Text survives a patchy mobile connection that would break a video call, and nothing at the door wants an email or a phone number. "No personal data is required," the site says. Voice and video calls exist, but only as extras inside a room. The room is the product.
What TalkWithStranger gets right
- It's free the whole way through. "Our Random Chatting website is free for everyone and always will be!" Its terms don't mention a subscription, a premium tier or VIP anywhere, and the Girls, Boys and Teens rooms are open to everyone. In this niche, most services charge for choosing a gender.
- Getting in takes a nickname and one click. No email, no phone, no social account.
- Rooms built around an interest or a region suit people who want a crowd with something in common, not the next random face.
- Ten years is a long life for a chat site. Plenty of its rivals have closed in that time.
What you run into there
Two ages on one site. The terms of service say you affirm you are "more than 13 years of age, an emancipated minor, or possess legal parental or guardian consent." The footer of the same site says: "You must be over 18 with parental permission to use our free chat site." And since you walk in with a nickname, nothing checks either one.
A handful of reviews, mostly unhappy. On Trustpilot the site scored 2.1 out of 5 on 27 August 2026. That's from nine reviews, far too few to prove much, but the same complaints keep coming back: lots of ads, sexual harassment, a profile you can't delete, and mutes nobody explains. "I've been muted like two or three times for absolutely no reason by the anti-spam wave," one reviewer wrote in August 2026. Another, in May 2023: "despite the site mentioning me having a right to erase my profile, there is no way you can do it." The optional account does exist, and the site mentions email verification for it, but the chat never asks you to make one.
No app. A Google Play search for "talkwithstranger" on 27 August 2026 showed nothing from TalkWithStranger Inc. It's a website and nothing else.
Not much about who runs it. The documents name TalkWithStranger Inc. and say "The laws of the State of Washington" govern the license. Who owns the domain is hidden behind Domains By Proxy.
Veilr, point by point
The door asks for more, on purpose. There's no nickname-only entry. You sign in with an account you already have, like Google, and the sign-in screen shows which ones are available. There's no new password to invent and no guest mode, and searching doesn't start until you're signed in. On your first visit you answer three questions: your gender, your date of birth and your native language. Veilr is for adults only: our servers won't match an account whose recorded age is under 18.
One partner, not a room. Press ‘Start text chat’ and Veilr pairs you with someone. The chat stays text until it ends, so nobody asks for your camera halfway through. If you'd like to hear a voice, choose voice before you search; a text chat that's already going can't become a call.
Picking a gender costs nothing here either. TalkWithStranger does it with separate rooms. On Veilr it's a preference: once your own gender is in your profile, say who you'd like to talk to, and Veilr tries that first if someone who fits is online. If nobody does, you get matched with someone else rather than left waiting in an empty queue. Your partner's preference counts too. With Boost your choice holds firm, and you move to the front of the line.
Where the ads are. A free account may see an ad between matches or while it searches. Nothing appears inside a chat or a call, and with Boost there are none.
Keeping someone. ‘Add to contacts’ works during the chat, and for a short while on the panel shown after a text chat ends. Your partner gets a request they can accept later. Once you've both added each other, the conversation moves to your private chats, and each of you gets the other's display name and account email.
Deleting and reporting. You can delete your account from inside the app. That removes your profile, your contacts, your private chats and the photos you sent. If the account was banned, a minimal record of the ban stays, so deleting doesn't lift it. If a chat turns ugly, report it while it's open: you're moved on to a new partner, and the two of you are kept out of each other's matches for 24 hours. Blocking is a separate choice, and it works in both directions.
An app on Android, the browser elsewhere. On Android you can install Veilr from Google Play. On an iPhone or a computer it runs in the browser. It isn't available in the United Kingdom.

The rooms, the games and the one-click door belong to TalkWithStranger, and if that's what you came for, you already have it. Veilr fits a quieter plan: one conversation at a time on an adults-only service, and a way to find them again next week.
