ChatVille alternative: one stranger at a time instead of a four-camera room
ChatVille is one of the oldest names in webcam chat. You can walk in as a guest, pay nothing, pick the gender you want to see without a paywall, and share a room with up to four cameras at once. Its homepage adds a line most sites would bury: "You are not going to be monitored by our staff." That's the trade on offer. Veilr makes the opposite one. You sign in, you're paired with one person, and a report does something. The camera window at the top of this page runs Veilr.
What ChatVille offers that Veilr doesn't
A room instead of a roulette. By its own description, up to four people can broadcast together, you can see who is watching your webcam, participants rate each other, and you can invite someone into a private cam2cam. The site calls it "your virtual nightclub". Veilr has nothing like that: every match is two people, with no audience.
A door with no lock. "You can log in as a guest," and a free account, if you want one, adds unlimited messages, private webcam chat, a reserved nickname and access to members' rooms. The FAQ says the whole service is free and that you "don't need to pay for features".
A free gender filter. In a niche where that filter is the usual paid item, ChatVille gives it away and uses it against rivals, noting that on Ome.tv you'd need a paid gender filter option for the same thing.
The camera is optional. "No device required for video chat," says the FAQ, and you can talk by text instead. It runs in any browser, including on Android and iPhone, with nothing to install.
One name, two different products
ChatVille began in 2010 as a Facebook app built by the team behind the Digsby messenger. VentureBeat and Fast Company both covered it, and in May 2010 chatville.com simply forwarded to the app on Facebook. By January 2012 the same address carried a standalone Chatroulette-style site. The domain itself dates from 6 November 1997. Whether the people behind the 2010 app still own today's site is something public records don't confirm.
The homepage still reads like it was written a decade ago. It lists Stickam, Camzap, Tipitty, Wocchat and iMeetzu as alternatives, alongside Omegle, which shut down in 2023.
Who runs it, and what it collects
No company is named anywhere on the site: not in the terms, not in the privacy policy, not in the footer. The WHOIS record is private, registered through a privacy service in Tampa, Florida.
The chat itself isn't served by chatville.com. The page loads a widget from cammedia.com, the site of Cam Media LTD, "Online Video Specialists", and both domains use the same registrar. That's a technical link, not proof of who owns what.
The privacy policy was last changed on 12 January 2020. It says data is processed in the United States and mentions collecting location, including GPS or cell ID. There's no GDPR section, no retention periods and no way described to have your data deleted.
What "not monitored" means in practice
ChatVille calls itself "a chatroulette alternative site for adults" and says you must be 18 or older. The only thing standing behind that is a free click-through script from ageverification.org, which takes your word for it.
The gender filter works the same way. One of the room rules reads: "Do not log in as a female or couple if you are a male." In other words, the filter holds as long as people are honest.
To be fair, Veilr doesn't check anyone's gender either; it's what each person states in their profile. The difference is what happens when someone behaves badly, and that comes next.
What Veilr does instead
An account instead of a guest pass. ChatVille lets anyone walk in unnamed. Veilr lets nobody search without signing in through an account they already have, and the sign-in screen shows which kinds it accepts. The first time, there's a short profile: name, gender, date of birth, native language. It's adults only, and the server won't match an account recorded as under 18.
A report has consequences. ChatVille says its staff won't be watching. On Veilr, reporting a partner mid-chat ends that conversation for you and sends you on to someone new, and for the following 24 hours the two of you can't be paired again. Whether to block them for good is up to you. No call is ever saved as a recording; a report is what lets one still frame be captured, for our safety team to review. Automatic penalties stop at 30 days. Only a person can make a ban permanent, and the notice says which kind you got.
Location without GPS. Where ChatVille's policy mentions GPS or cell ID, Veilr reads your country from your connection and asks for no location permission at all. On Android the app requests the camera, the microphone and notifications; your location, contacts and files stay off-limits.
Free to choose, as on ChatVille, but as a preference. Once your gender is on your profile, you can say who you'd like to meet without paying. If any of them are on video, the search tries them first. If none are, you meet someone else rather than sit waiting, and your partner's own wish counts every time. Buy Boost and it stops bending: your choice turns strict and you're at the head of the queue.
Free, with two extras for sale. Text, voice and video cost nothing to use. Boost and extra caption minutes are each sold as a single purchase, never a subscription, at prices you'll see in the app.
When you don't share a language. A room full of cameras runs in whatever language the room speaks. On Veilr there's no room language to fit into: your messages can be translated into your partner's language, with your original a tap away. A free allowance covers the first ones, rewards add more, and Boost removes the limit. If your declared native languages differ, a call can bring up captions unprompted, with five minutes free on a new account and more from Boost, a top-up or a reward.

Yes. The FAQ says it's completely free, that you don't have to pay for features, and that signing up is free as well, though some features need an account.

It says it's for adults, checks age only with a click-through script, and states that its staff won't monitor you. We found no documented incidents, and also no company named as the one running it.
Is this the ChatVille Facebook app from 2010?
Same name and same domain, a different product. Nothing public confirms that the 2010 team still runs it.
Can I use ChatVille without a camera?
Yes, its FAQ says you can talk by text or video. On Veilr, text chat is a separate mode you choose before the search, on the text chat page.
