Chamet alternative: video chat with strangers, not paid hosts
On Chamet, the face on the other end of a one-to-one call usually belongs to a host, and every host has a price. A free call matched through a trial card "typically lasts 90 seconds." After that, diamonds come off your balance at a rate that "depends on the specific host's online video chat price." Veilr has no hosts and no meter: you're matched with a stranger, and the call costs nothing however long it runs. The video window at the top of this page is Veilr's.
How Chamet got big in South Asia
The app appeared on Google Play on 15 November 2019 and grew in India and Pakistan on one simple model: you pay by the minute to talk to a host. It has a Hindi interface, an agency network that brings in hosts, and local ways to top up. By its own account it has been the top-grossing app in India and Pakistan and in the top ten in the UAE and Saudi Arabia.
TechCrunch reported on 1 September 2023 that users in India had spent $15.4 million on it in 2022 and $13.4 million between January and July 2023. That August, Google pulled Chamet from the Play Store under its policy on user-generated content: "Apps whose primary purpose is featuring objectionable UGC will be removed from Google Play." It was the top-grossing app on Indian Google Play when it went. Later it came back. On 24 July 2026 the listing was updated, showing more than 50 million installs, a 4.0 rating, a Mature 17+ label, ads and in-app purchases.
What Chamet does well
- The scale on its home markets is real. So is the income for hosts, from agencies and a share of gifts, and that keeps people on the other side of the camera.
- A face-based "real-person" check. Against bots and fake profiles it does more than the full anonymity of many rivals.
- Real-time translation, and an interface in English, Hindi, Arabic, Spanish, French, Russian and Vietnamese.
- More than one way to spend an evening: one-to-one calls, live streams, party rooms of up to five people with games, and a Moments feed. If you'd rather keep your face off screen, there are voice chat rooms too.
Where the money goes
Without diamonds you still get the public party rooms, the streams and daily login bonuses. One-to-one video needs diamonds once the trial is over, and the price per minute is set by the host. Chamet publishes neither that price nor what a diamond costs. Google Play lists in-app purchases from $0.99 to $149.99 per item.
VIP levels are measured in top-ups. Pink Diamond starts at 100 million diamonds in a month, Blue at 300 million, Purple at 1,000 million. Refunds are ruled out in capital letters: "CHAMET IS NOT REQUIRED TO PROVIDE A REFUND FOR ANY REASON." The same agreement has you "waive any right you may have under EU or other local law to cancel your purchase once it's completed or to get a refund."
What doesn't sit right
The app can change your gender. "If an opposite-gender person appears on screen during your live stream or random chat video, the system will automatically change your gender for safety." To change it back, you have to pass the face check.
Two age rules in one section. "No one under 18 is allowed to create an account or use the Services." Then, in the same part of the agreement: "If you are under the age of 18, you may use the Service, with or without registering, only with the approval of your parent or guardian."
An account, then your face. You sign up with Google, Facebook or a phone number, and the "real-person" check by face comes on top of that.
Nobody named. The user agreement calls the operator just "CHAMET", with no country and no address. TechCrunch described the publisher as an opaque Chinese company. The app's package name is com.hkfuliao.chamet.
A download button with nothing behind it. chamet.com/download shows "Download on App Store." On 27 August 2026, Apple's search found no Chamet app in the US, UK, Indian, UAE or Saudi stores.
What Veilr does instead
No meter. Finding a partner and talking are free in video, voice and text. There's no trial card and no per-minute rate. What Veilr sells is optional and bought once: Boost passes and extra minutes of live captions. Nothing renews.
A refund rule that doesn't override the law. As a rule, a Boost that has already started isn't refunded. Our terms say that rule can't override your rights as a consumer, including cooling-off rights, or the refund policy of whoever sold you the pass: Google Play in the app, a payment provider on the web.
Your gender is what you entered. You sign in with an account you already have and give three answers once: gender, date of birth, native language. Then you can say who you'd like to meet. That's free, and it's tried first if someone who fits is online; if nobody does, you're matched with someone else instead of waiting. The other person's choice is respected too. With Boost, your choice holds and you're first in the queue.
One age rule. Veilr is 18+. Our servers refuse a match to any account recorded as under 18.
Captions across languages. When your declared native languages differ, live captions in your language can appear over your partner's video. There are 34 caption languages. A new account gets five minutes free; after that it's Boost, a top-up or a reward.
Verification you choose. Chamet builds its face check into the account. On Veilr a verified badge is optional, and asking to meet only verified people is a Boost option.
Ads stay out of calls. A free account may see an ad between matches or while it searches, never during a call. Boost removes them.
Where it works. There's an Android app on Google Play. On iPhone and on a computer, Veilr runs in the browser. It isn't available in the United Kingdom.
What Veilr doesn't have: live streams, party rooms, Moments, or anyone paid to keep the conversation going.

Partly. Party rooms, streams and daily bonuses are free; one-to-one calls after the trial are not.
Why was Chamet removed from the Play Store?
In August 2023 Google pulled it under its policy on objectionable user-generated content, TechCrunch reported. It's back on Google Play now; the listing was updated on 24 July 2026.
Is Chamet on iPhone?
We found no App Store app on 27 August 2026, although its site shows an App Store button. Chamet also runs a web app, which we didn't test on iPhone. Veilr has no App Store app either; on iPhone it runs in the browser.
